Abstract egg-art

This will be one of my own traditions in the years to come, but I will need a smaller brush and a good black pencil, because this abstract art was not really intended …
A good thing I could tone it down with snapseed.

I made at least one decision

January 22, 2013 § 8 Comments

The highly not likely gothic cathedral in Florence.

The highly not typical gothic cathedral in Florence. Easily seen compared to the Cologne Cathedral in Germany on top in this picture. From Gardner´s Art Through the Ages.

During my art history studies back in the days I made (at least) one decision, I had to travel to Italy to see all the things I read about. Florence was essential, then Rome, then I would´ve loved to drive around in the coutryside with good friends. I never went to Italy. I went to Africa, Oceania and America, but during all these years (almost fifteen) never Italy. I guess I waited for the right travel companions at the right time. Suddenly a few days ago I thought – why not just go? Now the tickets are bought to Florence and I´ll stay for a week, finally.

Some googled glimpses of the lovely city.

Some googled glimpses of the lovely city.

I can´t stand heat combined with crowds and queues of summer this far south. This time of year it´s winter and the least amount of tourists in Florence, so it suits me well, I might even get into the Uffizi Gallery without much effort. I hope this will be the first of many visits to Italy.

Decorate with memories

I’m not spending Christmas in my own apartment, that’s why I like to decorate it for Christmas early in advent to enjoy extra light and create my own traditions. So my tree is up all December even though I’m not used to that from childhood. And I decorate it with memories, mostly. An angel which joined our four week long roadtrip in New Zealand, a little santa my brother once made for me, a couple of decorated shells a former colleage once made, and so on. The tree gets even more meaning than it already represents.

True story

Almost twenty years ago I got to meet the real santa. I remember him well. He spoke of course many languages, also mine. He was just as we’ve learned. So relax, I can assure you, santa is very real.

Some kind of a loner

September 3, 2012 § Leave a comment

Sometimes it´s a good thing to go to the movies all alone. Especially if you know you´ll love the film but don´t know if any of your friends will. I love to go to the movies as a social act but I tend to care a little to much about the other people´s experience, if they think it was worth their money. Here´s a few glimpses of films I´ve seen alone, feeling invisible on a weeknight, just sliding down in the dark of the movietheatre, having a great time in that other fabulous world. Sometimes I feel a bit like a loner but I absolutly recommend that way of experience a film you know you like. What about a regular moviemonday? I saw The Dark Knight alone last monday and I´ll see Kon-Tiki with friends tomorrow. Mondays are starting to look good.

Some of the films I´ve seen at the movies alone. District 9, Hamlet (three times) and Inception.

A well kept secret for almost a year.

Good things will come to those who wait. I´ll tell you a secret, back in my fridge there´s a Christmas soda I saved last year. It´s the best Christmas drink there is, the one from Hamar and Lillehammer brewery. Now I can open it as soon as I feel like it´s time to look forward to Christmas. It´s not yet.

PS: I´ve often wondered why they haven´t renewed the label. But now I read that it is designed by Myres|Lintas reklamebyrå and illustrated by Per Solheim in the early 80´s. It´s almost as old as myself. I like that.

The Christmas star disappears in November

The unknown Vilde Zeiner plays the orphan girl who goes looking for the star.

The movie every Norwegian loves made in 1976.

One of the most important stories told before Christmas in Norway is Reisen til Julestjernen (Journey to the Christmas Star). The play written by Sverre Brandt in 1924 is always on theaters and every year on Christmas Day the film made in 1976 is showed on national TV. It is lovely, though very visible that it was made forty years ago. Some actors do a decent job, others not so much. But it has overwhelming charm.

This November, in 2012, a remake will be released upon us, and I´m trembling with fearful joy. Will it be fantastic and worthy a step forward or will I be deeply disappointed? So much seems to be right, the director Nils Gaup (Veiviseren, Håkon Håkonsen, Kautokeino-opprøret) sounds happy and the teaser-pictures are lovely. The Walt Disney Company Nordic will distribute it on Norwegian cinemas so I guess they´ve had some money to spend as well.

Some movies are certain to be fun, like The Hobbit. Others are hoped for by many but doesn´t always fill the expectations. I cross all that can be crossed for Reisen til Julestjernen.

Lovely pictures from the brand new Reisen til Julestjernen.

Here is the teaser on Vimeo.

When there is no treasure map

My all time favourite coffee cup.

It was waiting for me at a Flea Market ten years ago. At that time they were two and not so lonely. There´s only one left now and it´s my favourite. All this time since I bought them at that market I´ve been watching out for more of it´s family members. I would´ve loved the whole set, but I´ve never seen anything even similar. Yesterday I went to a market in a backyard close by where I live. There was two markets in the same area, and when we went from one to the other, I remembered this most fantastic store called Maggi´s.

She opened her store Maggi´s way past retirement age. (Photo borrowed from Østkantavisa.)

We were in that market-mood so we went up the stairs and balanced through furniture and overfilled shelves, so many treasures and recognizeable items from childhood. And there, in a dark corner, behind some flower decorated china, was my beloved coffee cup´s relatives.

I found quite a few of the things I was looking for.

The cups doesn´t have the same size as my old one, so it will still be my one favourite, but I´m satisfied, for now.

Postcards of reminiscence

Two new postcards looking old.

How many people still put a pen in their hand, write some thought through words with love, lick the stamp and put the card in the mailbox? I´m thinking they´re not so many anymore and at least over 30 years old, maybe double that number. But who loves getting a handwritten postcard addressed to only them, everyone of course.

Searching through a over 100 years old archive there are treasures to be found. As a gift to the people who support our work (Norwegian Sundayschool Association) we´ve a couple of times recently made postcards. The text on them are treasured passages in the Bible and the illustrations are ones I´ve found digging in the old and dusty archive of a children´s magazine called BARNAS. These two illustrations were from around 1920-30 if I remember right. Seems like it wasn´t always custom to say who drew them, cause I can´t find any names, suppose a lot of these drawings were well known drawings a lot of different publications printed.

Handle with care.

And my friends, I’ve Returned to wish you all the best
